Island Archers summer holidays

Just to inform everyone who didn't already know that due to the fact that Sgoil nan Loch's janitor is on holiday, and there's no-one else able to let us in to our normal venue, the Club is on an enforced break for a couple of weeks.

Our next scheduled Club shooting night will be on 11th August 2010 at 7pm. Apologies for any inconvenience.

Island Archers is on the move!

Following an exhaustive search of potential safe venues for its weekly archery meetings, Island Archers is to move from the Nicolson Institute in Stornoway to Sgoil Nan Loch (Lochs School) in Cameron Terrace, Leurbost, starting on 9th June 2010.

The Club had a large influx of regularly-shooting members at the beginning of the year, and it rapidly became apparent that with the new members, Island Archers had outgrown its regular venue at the Nicolson Institute, and so it began a quest to find a new indoor venue large enough to accommodate its burgeoning membership.

That search eventually became focused on Sgoil Nan Loch, just over ten minutes drive away in Cameron Terrace, Leurbost, since the school not only had a games hall large enough to accommodate its members renaissance, and was long enough to shoot the longest of indoor archery rounds, but it also had a sports pitch outside which could potentially be used for outdoor archery; a facility that the Club has for many years been lacking.

Following discussions with Sgoil Nan Loch and representatives of Lochs Football Club, who also use the sports pitch, Island Archers is now delighted to announce that an agreement has been reached for the Club to use both the indoor games hall during the winter months and outdoor pitch during the summer.

UPDATED - Winter Venues

Following the postponement of Fifth Year exams being held in the Nicolson Institute Assembly Hall, the Club has been advised of a revised list of dates when we're likely to be shooting in the Matheson Hall due to Nicolson Institute events being held in their Assembly Hall.

The Club has also recently had a large influx of beginners, which would mean that the shooting line would be too crowded if both beginners and existing Club members turned up at the same time for the evenings we are in the Matheson Hall. So, the Club has decided to shift the Club members shooting night to Tuesday evenings for the first two weeks of February (ie Club shooting nights will be on Tuesday 2nd and Tuesday 9th February 2010), before reverting to our more usual Wednesday evening slot when we return to the Assembly Hall on Wednesday 17 th February. Our new novices will take the Club's Wednesday night slot in the Matheson Hall for Wednesday 3rd and Wednesday 10th February 2010.

Adverse weather hits indoor shooting

According to the latest information from the Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, the Nicolson Institute will be shut on 6th January due to concerns about the weather and freezing conditions under-foot:-

"The majority of schools in the Western Isles should be open tomorrow [6th January].
9 schools will definitely be shut to pupils - Balallan, Breasclete, Bernera, Pairc, Sgoil nan Loch, Sir E. Scott, Uig, Barvas and The Nicolson Institute. More work will be carried out to clear pavements around schools but care will need to be exercised on footpaths and public car parks.
Schools opening are subject to weather conditions and further information will be issued as appropriate.
Comhairle nan Eilean Siar is continuing to take all reasonable steps to keep roads ice-free but grit stocks are low. Priority gritting is taking place and efforts are being made to bring in more supplies of grit."

Unfortunately, since the Nicolson Institute is closed to pupils due to Health & Safety concerns about car parks, pavements, and footpaths, it is more than likely that it will also affect the Club's scheduled shooting night, and therefore, with some reluctance, Island Archers has had to cancel its shooting session on the night of 6th January.
