Record entry for Sports Festival archery

Shooting at the 2010 TournamentLewis & Harris Sports Council's annual Sports Festival archery event, held this year on Saturday 27th February, saw entry numbers climb to new heights, partly due to a recent renaissance at local archery club Island Archers, and partly to three brave novices who had taken part in the archery taster event held immediately prior to the competition pluckily deciding to get stuck in and see how they got on.

Island Archers Chairman Toby Marshall set his stall out early in the individual competition, and never looked back throughout, whilst the competition for second, third, and fourth and fifth was extremely hard fought, with numerous place-changing between Stuart Oakley, Jason Spinks, Ken Le Goubin, and Ladies competition-winner Heide Macleod.

Further back the field, the novices competition was also a raging battle. Michelle Paton prevailed, even managing to better some of her more experienced shooting line compatriots for a time, whilst John Graham lead his thrown-together 'New Boys' team from the front, and put in a creditable 121 to take ninth and second-placed novice. His charismatic team-mate Donald Macleod put in a late charge, and was only just thwarted by some wayward arrows toward the end.

2009 Sports Festival Archery events a resounding success

The 2009 Lewis & Harris Sports Council's Sports Festival Archery events were held in the main sports hall at the Ionad Spòr Leòdhais (Lewis Sports Centre, Stornoway) on Saturday 28th February 2009.

The sports hall was new venue for the event, which is usually held in the Nicolson Institute assembly hall, as it was felt that the numbers turning up for the come-and-try archery taster session in previous years had made it harder to maintain the necessary safety protocols, and the venue switch was felt to be an extremely positive step, and worth repeating.

The afternoon got underway with six archery novices nervously eyeing a bewildering array of archery paraphernalia set up for them by Island Archers for the come-and-try taster session. But once they had been given some instruction in the art and science of the sport, and had been given the opportunity to put the theory into practice, they all took to it like ducks to water, and did immensely well for a group with so little experience. No balloon pinned to the targets was safe!

Especially gratifying from the Club's point of view is that it is likely that some will come along to some Island Archers Wednesday night shooting sessions, and may well be rising stars of the future...

Sports Festival Archery Individual Competition '06

Congratulations to everyone who took part in the hotly-contested Lewis and Harris Sports Festival Archery Individual competition last night.

The evening kicked off with the Junior Gents Competition, and many of the early-arriving seniors were incredibly impressed with the standard of competition, especially since most of the competitors hadn't had much archery experience, if any at all.

The Seniors Competition was as keenly contested as ever, with the top two Senior Gents only separated by three or four points for most of the evening, whilst the winner of the Ladies showed the rest of the field a clean pair of heels, racking up a Senior Ladies club record of 441 for a Portsmouth round on her way to overall victory.
